"I was born in Brookline, MA, in 1946. When I was a student at Waltham (MA) Public High School I belonged to a religious group founded by the Jesuits in the 16th century, and our "apostolate" was to learn more about the Civil Rights Movement and eventually the Vietnam War. At the Jesuit college I attended I continued with this group and became aware of what would later be called "a theology of liberation" and Vatican Council II, and was also introduced to the Catholic Worker and social activism outreach in the inner-city. At Yale Divinity School I continued this exploration while others in the University were much involved with the Black Panther's trial, anti-war activities, and inter-religious dialogue. These interests continued during work towards the Ph.D. at Harvard, but in a more global perspective, especially Latin America. I did research into poverty and human rights later in Ireland at the Center for Social Welfare. And in 1999 I traveled to Palestine and Israel to study sacred sites and meet various people: Jews, Christians, and Muslims."
