about

On January 26, Marco Saavedra, a long-time undocumented activist and Kenyon alum (class of 2011), returned to campus to update the community about his asylum case and screen THE INFILTRATORS, a film that tells the story of his infiltration of a for-profit immigrant detention center in Florida in 2012 along with fellow activist Viridiana Martinez. During the Q&A that followed, Marco reflected on his time at Kenyon and took questions from the audience. In Marco's own words, "We shared an intimate, powerful & rare Sunday evening event & “the thrill of spirit” flowed. The title for this brief exchange is taken from Du Bois’ exploration of the Sorrow Songs, echoes which we still hear today amidst so much injustice “My soul wants something that’s new, that’s new.”

After a January 17, 2020 deadline to submit all final evidence and arguments, the judge in Marco’s asylum case is expected to issue a ruling in the coming days/weeks. If Marco's petition for asylum is denied, his defense team will appeal to the board of immigration appeals, a process that could take years.
